Laurent Baheux

The artist

Practice and perspective

Laurent Baheux is a French fine art photographer celebrated for his powerful black-and-white portraits of wildlife. Through deep shadows, luminous highlights and dramatic contrasts, he reveals the beauty, character and individuality of animals in their natural habitats.

Born in Poitiers in 1970, Baheux is a self-taught photographer who began his career covering sport and current affairs. In 2002, he turned his lens towards Africa, beginning a journey that would shape his artistic practice and his commitment to the protection of wildlife.

His photographs capture moments of strength, tenderness and quiet intimacy. Lions emerge from darkness, elephants move across vast landscapes, and the smallest gestures become portraits of remarkable emotional depth. Each animal is presented as an individual, with its own presence and personality.

Baheux’s work extends beyond the African continent to Arctic environments and, more recently, to free-roaming horses. Across these subjects, his distinctive visual language remains the same: a sensitive use of light and shadow that brings the viewer closer to the living world.

In 2007, his work received a Special Commendation in the Creative Visions of Nature category of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. His photographs have since been exhibited in galleries and photography festivals internationally and published in numerous books, including The Family Album of Wild Africa, Ice is Black, Lions and Elephant.

Conservation is central to Baheux’s practice. In 2013, he participated as a goodwill ambassador in the United Nations Environment Programme’s Wild & Precious initiative, an international project raising awareness of threats to wildlife.

Studio 54 Fine Art is proud to present the work of Laurent Baheux to collectors worldwide. The gallery’s relationship with the photographer began in 2016 and developed into formal representation in 2026.
