The artist
Practice and perspective
Monty Hitchcock is a British painter whose work follows a long career in film and television art direction and production design. That experience of building spaces and shaping emotional atmosphere informs paintings that move between figuration and abstraction.
He describes painting as an inquiry into cinematic structure and the energy of a neurodivergent mind. Layered surfaces and physical gestures place carefully constructed space alongside intuitive movement; his work also connects with his advocacy for the ADHD Foundation.
Hitchcock’s screen career involved building sets internationally and working with figures including Ridley Scott, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford and Tom Cruise. His official biography connects the discipline of spatial storytelling developed in that work with the emotional tone and physical construction of his paintings. An ADHD diagnosis in 2018 was an important catalyst in the development of his painting practice.
His materials range from oil and acrylic to button polish and oil stick. Large canvases such as Bali and A Japanese Tea sit alongside more recent works including Aaron, Crossroads and Companions. His first solo exhibition, A Happy Accident, took place at the Union Club in Soho in 2020. The exhibition introduced an energetic body of paintings to a London audience, while his subsequent work continues to investigate the relationship between perception, memory and intuitive mark making.
