The artist
Practice and perspective
Rebecca Lynn Yunk, also known as Becky Yunk, is based in Waukesha, Wisconsin. She shapes different gauges of copper wire into drawings of horses, translating a lifelong interest in the animals into flowing contours that describe movement and connection.
Her practice also encompasses other animals, pet and human portraits, drawing and painting. Her earliest wire pieces included bison mounted on driftwood; she later returned to making and selling art after moving back to Wisconsin. She also supports charitable programmes serving veterans and therapeutic work involving horses.
Wire allows Yunk to retain the character of a drawn line while making a physical object. Her artist statement describes works that can fit into picture frames, sit against driftwood or flower pots, or become dream catchers. Changing wire gauges gives her another means of defining the animals and producing commissioned pet portraits.
The relationships between horses recur across her titled works. Running on the Wind depicts a mare and foal moving together; Bound by Beauty presents three walking horses; Spirits in Motion describes a group in a running rhythm. Studio 54 also offers photographic reproductions of selected wire originals, distinguishing the copper sculptures from archival pigment prints on Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper. Alongside making art, Yunk’s own statement identifies support for Healing Warrior Hearts, LifeStriders and HorsePower Healing Center as part of her charitable commitment.
