Buying art online should still feel personal. A professional gallery should answer specific questions, provide clear documentation and help you understand exactly what you are acquiring.

1. Begin with the artwork, not the trend

Look for a work you want to live with. Consider emotional impact, scale, medium and how the artwork changes throughout the day in its intended space. Ask for accurate dimensions and, where helpful, a digital placement mock-up.

2. Confirm price and availability

Request the current selling price, currency, taxes, framing cost, delivery cost and whether the work is immediately available. For private sales, the gallery may provide the price directly rather than displaying it publicly.

3. Verify authenticity and provenance

Confirm the artist’s name, artwork title, date, medium and ownership history. The relevant certificate of authenticity should match the work. For editions, confirm the edition number and total edition size in writing.

4. Understand limited editions

A limited-edition photograph should specify the production process, paper or substrate, signature, numbering and any artist proofs. Ask whether other sizes form separate editions, as this affects scarcity.

5. Check condition, framing and delivery

Request a condition statement and clarify whether framing is included. International delivery should use appropriate packing and insurance. Confirm who handles customs, import taxes and installation before payment.
