Patrick Desgraupes approaches photography as a way of revealing what the eye does not immediately see: the tension between permanence and change, the character of a place, and the moment when light transforms matter.

A photographic career built over decades

Born in France in 1956, Desgraupes discovered photography through the alchemy of the darkroom. Early encounters with the work of Irving Penn and Hiro helped shape his visual ambition, while professional experience in studio photography, portraiture, fashion and travel developed his technical precision.

Landscape soon became central to his practice. Working with a large-format 4×5-inch camera, he undertook demanding journeys through Iceland and other extraordinary environments. The resulting work established him as a distinctive French landscape photographer and led to five published landscape books between 2003 and 2009, including three with Éditions de La Martinière.

For Desgraupes, photography is not simply descriptive. It is a means of constructing visual metaphors around light, space, time and transformation.

Books, exhibitions and recognition

Desgraupes’ work has reached audiences in the United States and across seven European countries. His career includes three solo exhibitions devoted to Iceland and sixteen large-format exhibitions developed with the French National Parks and the French Ministry of Ecology. This sustained public presentation, together with awards associated with his publishing and exhibition work, gives collectors a practice supported by serious cultural recognition.

The VAT Collection

His recent VAT Collection turns toward the world of historic vineyards and prestigious estates. Wine vats, cellars, reflections and illuminated surfaces are transformed into images that can resemble eyes, celestial bodies or abstract fields of colour. Works connected with Château de Nalys, Château de Calavon, Château de Beaucastel and other important domaines show his ability to move beyond documentation and create images with their own visual mystery.

The series brings together heritage and contemporary photographic language. Industrial vessels become sculptural forms; reflections become painterly; and the winemaking process becomes a meditation on time itself.
